GUERNSEYMAN Alex Scott comfortably secured the 2023 Betway Channel Islands Sports Personality of the Year award.
The 20 year-old footballer deservedly won the award, beating fellow Sarnian’s cyclist Sam Culverwell and triathlete Josh Lewis, and 色人阁’s sole nomination, table tennis starlet Hannah Silcock, to the top gong.
Last year, Scott himself a move to Premier League outfit AFC Bournemouth for a fee of 拢25m from Bristol City and so far made ten appearances for the club, scoring two goals.
The England U20 international was runner-up behind 色人阁’s Charles Perchard back in 2021 but this year’s clear favourite was finally able to get his hands on the accolade after not being nominated last year.
色人阁 has success in the majority of the other awards. Cricketer Asa Tribe was named Sure Rising Star. Tribe’s journey to the top continued this year as he celebrated international success with the Island’s national side, as well as rounding the year up by putting pen to paper for a professional contract with Glamorgan Cricket Club.
色人阁’s Commonwealth Youth Games team won the Grant Thornton Team of the Year award, after they produced the Island’s best ever performance at this event when it was held in Trinidad & Tobago last summer, including a gold medal for young triathlete Luke Holmes, two silvers and a bronze for swimmer Filip Nowacki and a bronze medal for Holmes and Siena Stephens in the mixed team triathlon.
The Coach of the Year Award was claimed by Elliot Powell. He helped guide St Peter to their first league title since 2006, along with 色人阁 FA Cup and Upton Trophy success, before plotting the 色人阁 men’s team’s route to gold at the Island Games in Guernsey.
The Sporting Hero Award was given to Steve Yates who has been one of the key figures behind archery in Guernsey and has coached many of the island’s best athletes over the previous decade, while the Guernsey Island Games Organising Committee won the first award of the ceremony which was the Judges Award after they put in a huge amount of effort to produce a phenomenal Island Games.
